Verifying Proportions

Ms. Ogans Student PhotoOne of Ms. Ogan's students thinks 2/3 is the same as 8/12. Can he prove it? Let's watch as Ms. Ogan puts him in the hot seat.

Video Case Study Activity

Video Case Study Activity Verifying Proportions (5.5 minutes)
Lisa Ogan: Ogan 02

She provides three different approaches:

  1. Divide numerator and denominator by 4 to reduce the fraction 8/12 to 2/3.
  2. Use cross multiplication to obtain (2)(12) = (3)(8), which is indeed true (24 = 24).
  3. Multiply both sides of the equation 2/3 = 8/12 by 3. The multiplier 3 was chosen because 3 is the greatest common factor of 3 and 12.
